What is a Carer’s Assessment?

Caring for a loved one can be so fulfilling but it also comes with its unique set of challenges.

If you’re supporting someone, like an elderly parent, with day-to-day tasks or medical needs, you could be entitled to help from your local council through what’s known as a carer’s assessment.

The assessment is free and aims to give advice on what can be done to support you as a carer.

How Can I Get a Carer’s Assessment?

Anyone over the age of 18 can ask for one. Get in touch with the adult social services team at your local council and ask for a carer’s assessment.

How Do I Know If I’m a Carer?

If you’re looking after someone on a regular basis, because they’re ill, elderly or disabled, then you’re classed as a carer. This includes family members.

Here are just some of the things that carers help out with:

  • Washing, dressing, taking medicines
  • Going to doctors’ appointments
  • Cleaning, cooking, laundry
  • Paying the bills or looking after finances

This list is by no means exhaustive. Carers do so much more than this, including offering emotional support like keeping someone company or watching over them if they can’t be left alone.

What Does a Carer’s Assessment Involve?

First you’ll be asked, by someone from the council or an organisation that works with them, how you’re coping with your caring responsibilities.

They’ll cover how it impacts all areas of your life including work, free time, relationships as well as your physical and mental health.

Usually the assessment lasts for at least an hour and is conducted face to face but it can be done over the phone or online.

What Do I Need to Do Before My Carer’s Assessment?

To prepare for your carer’s assessment make sure you have:

  • Your NHS number (if you’ve got one)
  • Your GP’s name, address and phone number
  • Contact details of anyone who’s attending the assessment with you
  • The name, address, date of birth and NHS number (if you have it) of the person you care for

Be as thorough, open and honest as you so that you’re able to get all the help and support you need.

What Does a Carer’s Assessment Recommend?

The carer’s assessment may recommend things like:

  • Someone taking over caring so you can take a break (respite care)
  • Exercising or signing up the gym to relieve stress
  • Support with taxi fares if can’t drive
  • Support with household chores
  • Training on how to safely lift
  • Support and advice about benefits for carers
  • Joining local support groups

Support With Costs

Your council may be able to support you with costs after having a financial (means test) initially, which will be arranged following the carer’s assessment.

What Happens After a Carer’s Assessment?

The local council will contact you, in due course, after the assessment to inform you of the results.

If you do qualify for help from the council, they’ll draft up a care and support plan with you, outlining what support they can offer.

What if I Don’t Qualify For Help From My Local Council?

If the outcome of the assessment is that you don’t qualify for help and support, then your council should give you free advice about where you can get help in your community.

If you’re caring for someone, remember that support is out there and you don’t have to wait until things become overwhelming. A carer’s assessment is the first step towards getting the help you deserve.
